Why Microsoft wants to buy TikTok, plus everything else you missed: CNBC After Hours

CNBC.com's MacKenzie Sigalos brings you the day's top business news headlines. On today's show, CNBC.com's Jordan Novet breaks down why TikTok, which has found itself at the center of a geopolitical conflict, would be an attractive acquisition target for enterprise giant Microsoft. Plus, CNBC's Sharon Epperson explains how much money Americans say they need to retire during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump says Microsoft should pay 'key money' to Treasury for facilitating TikTok deal President Donald Trump said Monday that it could be easier if Microsoft were to buy Chinese-owned TikTok in its entirety, rather than a small part of the social video app, because the name would be split across two companies, and suggested the company should pay the U.S. Treasury as part of the deal. "I thi...

‘We must fight’: Thailand’s youth take on the establishment

BANGKOK: Leaderless, social media-savvy and inspired by Hong Kong's young activists, Thailand's budding pro-democracy movement is intent on overhauling the government, rewriting the constitution and even taking on a law that shields the monarchy. The kingdom has seen a decades-long spin-cycle of coups and violent street protests led by well-funded veterans for or against the establishment. But the new generation of demonstrators says its fight is very different, as they stage near-daily protests with crowds of up to several thousand angry young Thais. "I just want my rights," said 20-year-old Rawee, real name Nawiboon Chompoo, who helps fire up rallies with chants for reform and by burning pictures of the country's prime minister. "The government is unreliable and bad for the peopl...

Japan and Myanmar agree to reopen borders for long-term residents

The foreign ministers of Japan and Myanmar agreed Monday to reopen borders for expatriates and other long-term residents as soon as early September, relaxing travel restrictions that were imposed to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi also confirmed at their meeting in Naypyidaw that they would speed up talks to facilitate short-term business travel, while taking measures to combat the virus, according to the Foreign Ministry. Motegi, in his final stop on a four-nation tour since Thursday, told reporters online that his country's pledges of economic and medical support to leaders in the respective countries demonstrated that "Japan leads international cooperation efforts" in fighting the pandemic. The ...

These areas of the cyclical trade are set to outperform, $114 billion money manager says

Parts of the cyclical trade could be prime for a comeback, says Wilmington Trust's Meghan Shue. With stocks closing at all-time highs after a record-making week, the narrow leadership from growth stocks may be an indicator of what's to come, the firm's head of investment strategy told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Friday. "A lot of commentators and strategists will point to this as a risk, and there are risks around that narrow leadership, but it also presents an opportunity," the $114 billion money manager said. With the economy slowly reopening and several possible coronavirus vaccines on the horizon, "we would expect to see some rotation into more cyclically oriented stocks," Shue said. But investors should be mindful of where they choose to put their money, she said. "When it comes t...

His death underscores the threat that Brazil's indigenous people are facing from the novel coronavirus pandemic that has spread to their vulnerable communities, infected thousands and killed hundreds. Aritana, 71, was rushed to a Goiânia hospital two weeks ago in a risky 9-hour drive from the western state of Mato Grosso, breathing with the aid of oxygen tanks so that he ...

US slaps sanctions on Chinese paramilitary body in Xinjiang

WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday (Jul 31) imposed sanctions on a major paramilitary group with vast interests in China's northwestern region of Xinjiang, accusing it of facilitating widespread abuses against Uighur Muslims. The Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps has been seen as a state within a state, running its own towns, universities and media geared overwhelmingly toward China's Han ethnic majority. The Treasury Department said it will freeze any US assets held by the body, known locally as the Bingtuan, and prohibit transactions with it. Calling China's actions toward minorities "the stain of the century," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the Bingtuan was "directly involved" in mass incarceration of Uighurs and other mostly Muslim communities in Xinjiang...

Japan and Cambodia to ease COVID-19 travel restrictions in September

Japan and Cambodia agreed Saturday to reopen borders to their expatriates as early as next month on condition they self-quarantine for 14 days and take other precautions against the novel coronavirus. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi agreed on the policy with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen during a meeting in Phnom Penh, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry. It is the third such agreement Japan has struck this month as Tokyo looks for ways to gradually relax immigration restrictions imposed on nearly 150 countries to slow the pandemic. The other two deals were reached with Singapore and Malaysia. Motegi aims to clinch similar travel resumption agreements with Laos and Myanmar, which he will visit on the final two stops of his four-nation tour through Tuesday. Before Cambodia, ...
